Super Eagles Midfielder, Joe Aribo, expressed his admiration for the vast array of footballing talent in Nigeria in a recent interview with Supersport.
The Southampton star waxed lyrical about the ability of Nigerian footballers: “There is a lot of quality with the population in Nigeria, there are so many good players. I think it is just important for us to keep making our Nation proud and keep showing that ability by striving and pushing harder,” he asserted.
When questioned on his footballing idol in Nigeria, Aribo wasted no time in expressing his love for Super Eagles Legend, Jay Jay Okocha: “I always say that my favorite player is Jay Jay Okocha, seeing him when I was young was amazing. The ability, the skill, and the confidence is just amazing to see,” he revealed.
Speaking on his first call-up for the Super Eagles, he affirmed how proud he and family was with his achievement: “My parents are Nigerian and I always watched Nigeria in the African Cup of Nations. I got called up and it was an amazing feeling. I’ve made my family proud and I am really pleased with it,” he said.
Rooted to the bottom of the table, Aribo’s Southampton has been struggling to adapt with the intensity of the Premier league. The Nigerian Midfielder who recently scored against Chelsea, however expressed optimism in his team’s ability to escape relegation.
“It has been a season with a lot of difficult moments, we are not in the place we want to be but we know that if we keep believing, keep pushing and keep fighting, we will get ourselves out of the situation we are in,” he preached.
“We all believe in what the manager wants from us, what he wants to do daily and it is just about showcasing it on the pitch and getting results,” Aribo added.
The midfielder will be hoping to get back into the fold of the Super Eagles as the team battles for World Cup Qualification and the AFCON in 2025.
