The Argentina Football Association has cancelled its planned friendly with the Super Eagles which was earlier scheduled for March 26 in the US.

The AFA announced the cancellation of the friendly on its website on Tuesday.

According to the AFA, the friendly against the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations runners-up was cancelled over visa issues.

The 2022 World Cup winners will instead play Costa Rica in Nigeria’s place.

The statement read, “Due to an administrative problem with visas, the Nigerian National Team will not be able to play its match against the Argentine National Team, scheduled for the double date in March in the United States. That is why the Costa Rica National Team will replace the African team on the stipulated schedule.”

Bold Sports had reported that the friendly match between Argentina and Nigeria which was initially billed for China was moved to the USA after a row between Argentina captain Lionell Messi and the Chinese government.

Nigeria had hoped to use the friendly game to tune up preparations ahead of their 2026 World Cup qualifying games against South Africa and Benin Republic.
