Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Nigerian striker Victor Boniface will miss the club’s final Bundesliga match of the year against Freiburg. The game is billed for the Bay Arena on Saturday.
The Nigeria international is working his way back to full fitness after suffering a hamstring injury during international duty with the Super Eagles. The injury sidelined the 23-year-old for seven matches across all competitions.
Boniface returned to full training earlier this week, a development celebrated by the club with an official announcement on Wednesday, December 18. However, Alonso has decided to exclude him from the final fixture to ensure he regains full fitness for the second half of the season.
“Victor Boniface, Amine Adli, and Jonas Hofmann are unavailable for the game due to injuries,” Alonso stated during his pre-match press conference on Friday.
Boniface has been a standout performer for Leverkusen this season. Despite missing the last four league games, he remains the club’s joint-top scorer with six goals in 10 Bundesliga appearances and has netted eight times in 15 matches across all competitions.
Leverkusen, the defending Bundesliga champions, began the season slowly but have regained form, winning their last seven matches across all competitions. They aim to finish the year strongly.
“2024 has been a great success for the club. We are proud to have been part of this historic journey. Now, our goal is to close the year with a victory,” Alonso added.
