Akwa United secured a vital win in their battle against relegation as they defeated Heartland Owerri 2-0 in their match day 18 encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Monday, December 23.
Akwa United interim coach, Umar Abdullahi made three changes to the side that lost to Bayelsa United as Friday Apollos, David Phillip and Darlingtin Ovunda were introduced to replace Samuel Matthew, Paul Acquah, and Hakeem Otuyiga.
The home side were awarded a penalty in the 30th minute as Osoba Kabir was brought down by Heartland goalkeeper, Ebuka Nwokoecha inside the box. Endurance Ebedebiri then converted the penalty with a brilliant strike to give Akwa United the lead.
The “promise keepers” extended their lead in the 68th minute as a pinpoint delivery from David Phillip was headed in by Chijioke Alaekwe to make the score line 2-0. Despite Heartland’s efforts to stage a comeback, the game ended 2-0 in favour of the home team.
The win means Akwa United are now up to 17th on the table with 19 points in 18 matches. They have also ended their three match winless streak where they lost twice to Ikorodu City and Bayelsa United while securing a draw against Bendel Insurance.
Fans of Akwa United will hope that the performance and the result can spark a rejuvenation, motivating their side to secure safety and ensure they can compete in the NPFL once again next season.
The “promise keepers” will travel to face league leaders, Remo Stars in their next match as they seek a statement result that can significantly boost their morale for the rest of the season.
