Ahmed Musa is unfazed over his exclusion from the Super Eagles squad to face South Africa and Benin in this month’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers, adding that his snub is not a concern.
The 31-year-old was part of Nigeria’s squad that finished second at the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. He last played for the Eagles in a friendly against Guinea last January, featuring for only seven minutes.
Despite being overlooked for the games, the former Sivasspor winger has thrown his support behind George, while acknowledging the immense pressure that comes with coaching the Super Eagles.
“I have spoken to him (George) and there is nothing to worry about,” Musa told ESPN.
“We didn’t qualify for the World Cup last time and everybody was sad. That is why that makes this very important this time and we can’t joke about it because World Cup is more important, especially for the young ones coming in. And of course, it is also very important for the country too. Qualifying would be a very big moment. It is not going to be very easy but we will do it.”
Nigeria have made a slow start in their World Cup qualifying campaign, drawing their first two games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, and now find themselves needing to beat South Africa to boost their chances of qualifying for the next edition billed to be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Musa also emphasized the importance of recording wins against South Africa and Benin Republic to boost confidence for both the coach and the team.
“The important thing is just to win these two games because if we win, a lot of confidence will come for him and the team,” Musa said.
“So we just have to support him and wish him best of luck.”
