Cameroon coach, Rigobert Song, has admitted that Nigeria was the better side and deserved to qualify for the quarter-final of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations at the expense of the Indomitable Lions.
Nigeria emerged 2-0 winners at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan thanks to a brace from forward Ademola Lookman, scoring a goal in each half.

Despite holding the statistical edge in possession (58%), Cameroon’s inability to translate dominance into clear-cut chances proved their undoing. In stark contrast, Nigeria’s clinical efficiency was evident in their eight shots, four on target, and two goals.

Speaking after the game, Song, a two-time AFCON winner as a player stated that Nigeria were the superior side and his boys didn’t have what it took to mount a comeback after going behind in the first half.
“Nigeria was well organized – we were in the match but became fragile over time. The players have quality but we could not suffer and come back. Things didn’t go well today, We are a very young team, and we did our best, I believe we’ll come back stronger.”

Since taking over as Cameroon’s coach, Song has won just six in 23 games. His team has suffered nine defeats and six draws.
