The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday unveiled Eric Chelle as the new Super Eagles coach during a press conference held at the Media Conference Room of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Notable personalities attended the event, including Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko; President of the NFF Ibrahim Gusau; NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi; Chairman of the NFF Technical & Development Committee, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme; and other officials.

Here are five key highlights from the unveiling:

1. Two-year contract

Eric Chelle signed a two-year deal with the NFF. His contract covers managing the Super Eagles through the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and potentially leading the team to the tournament if Nigeria secures a qualification ticket.

2. Option for a one-year extension

Chelle’s primary objective is to guide Nigeria to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. With the Super Eagles currently fifth in their group, qualification will be challenging. If he succeeds, his contract includes the option for a one-year extension.

3. Support team of three assistants

The NFF has granted Chelle the freedom to bring in three trusted assistant coaches to support him. In addition to his assistants, he will work closely with Nigerian coaches, who may be selected from the Nigeria Premier Football League or other qualified candidates.

4. Supervisory role for Super Eagles B team at CHAN

Contrary to earlier reports, Chelle will not take charge of the Super Eagles B team for the African Nations Championship (CHAN). Instead, he will play a supervisory role, while Remo Stars coach Daniel Ogunmodede and Enugu Rangers coach Fidelis Ilechukwu will lead the team to Morocco in February.

5. Proficient in English

Initially, concerns were raised about Chelle’s ability to communicate effectively in English, given his background as a French speaker, born in Ivory Coast to a French father and Malian mother. However, during the press conference, Chelle demonstrated fluency in English, dispelling those doubts. His professional career in France and managerial experience with French clubs and the Malian national team have prepared him well for his new role.
